CLIMATE CHANGES AND IT'S EFFECTS

Climate change threatens world development and sustainability. Low-adaptation developing countries are disproportionately affected. Climate change is affecting Kenyans and the environment. Ecotourism and rain-fed farming in Kenya are particularly susceptible to the effects of global warming and extreme weather. Crop and animal losses, hunger, displacement, and other health issues are all caused by the increasing frequency and severity of heat and drought. The low-lying coastline and nearby islands of Kenya are vulnerable to the effects of sea level rise on fisheries and storm surge protection. Greenhouse gas emissions from animal enteric fermentation are significant in the agricultural sector.

The semi-nomadic Samburu people of Kenya are only one example of a group whose way of life is shifting as a result of climate change. The Samburu raise a variety of animals, including cattle, goats, sheep, and camels. The men of Samburu herd their cattle out from the village during the dry season so that they may find fresh pasture for their animals. Because of climate change, the dry season has started earlier and lasted longer than normal, forcing people and animals to spend more time away from their homes than ever before. The disappearance of the animals has made it harder for the remaining women and children to provide for themselves.

Willdlife safaris are an integral part of Kenya's appeal to many tourists, climate change poses a threat to wildlife and might hurt Kenya's tourism sector. The local economy will take a hit if basic crops like corn and beans produce less than usual. When farmers are unable to sell their extra harvests, they have less money to spend on other basics like clothing, food, and petrol, all of which hurts other local businesses.

  1. Ecotourism is an important source of income in Kenya. It's preservation must be an interest.
